Shinken Forged Katana
Shinken means "real sword" in Japanese. These are the
same type of swords we use in our dojo for tameshigiri (test cutting). We offer
CAS Hanwei swords from Hanwei forge. They are all differentially tempered
hand forged swords with nicely polished blades.

The Hunter Katana is built on the Hanwei L6/Bainite blade in the Shinogi Zukuri style, and featuring superb koshirae, the Hunter is a very desirable and functional piece. The subdued green silk ito and green striped lacquered saya compliment the blackened tsuba with golden accents, featuring a raptor stalking his next prey.
Bainite is a structure of high-carbon steel that combines great strength with excellent flexibility and shock absorption characteristics. It has been known as an exemplary Katana blade component for a number of years but its use has been restricted to a few top-class master smiths, due to the difficulties involved in performing the exacting heat treatment procedures necessary for the production of a Bainite blade body in combination with the very hard Martensite Yakiba (edge section) required for Katana blades.
Hanwei has now mastered this difficult process, using billets of L-6 tool steel (a very tough high-carbon low-alloy steel) as a starting point. Blades are forged and shaped in the normal way, then carefully heat treated to achieve the required Bainite and Martensite structures before final polishing.

The Koi Katana from Paul Chen has a hand-forged T10 high-carbon steel blade. The blade on this katana is differentially
hardened using the traditional claying method. The Koi Katana is mounted in black and white and features black same, the
tsuka-ito is made of premium white Japanese cotton. The saya is finished in a deep black lacquer with a black and white
striped cotton sageo. A finely rendered Koi, with true front-and-back detail, forms the black iron tsuba. The fittings are
superbly antiqued adding to the aesthetics of the piece.

The blade of the Tonbo katana is hand-forged and folded from powder steel, with a medium-length (chu) kissaki. The saya is
a deep black lacquer featuring gold dragonflies. High quality ray skin (same) is used on the tsuka. The tsuka-ito is made
of premium purple Japanese cotton. The tsuba is crafted in black iron, with detailing in gold and bronze and an exquisite
dragonfly scene decoration. The silk sageo compliments this piece and is elegently woven in dark blue and black. The fuchi
and kashira are black and with bronze and brass detailing, and the kojiri, koiguchi and kurikata are of polished buffalo
horn. The habaki is a one-piece brass construction.

The blade of the Kaeru katana is hand-forged and folded from powder steel, with a medium-length (chu) kissaki. The saya is deeply lacquered in black. High quality ray skin (same) is used on the tsuka. The tsuka-ito is made of premium dark blue Japanese cotton. The tsuba is crafted in blacken iron, with detailing in gold and silver and a frog on lily pad scene decoration. The silk sageo compliments the theme of the Frog and is elegently woven in dark blue and moss green. The fuchi and kashira are of black with brass detailing, and the kojiri, koiguchi and kurikata are of polished buffalo horn. The habaki is a one-piece brass construction.
The Bamboo Mat Katana features a chu-kissaki blade of
Hanwei's high-alloy HWS-2S steel, which combines
impressive performance with a striking O-choji hamon.
This steel is made in Hanwei's new factory, with
high-tech equipment, producing a very pure,
advanced-metallurgy blade with excellent edge-holding
capability and resilience. The fittings feature a bamboo-themed black iron tsuba,
textured in a bamboo mat design with a jointed bamboo
rim and highlighted with gold-tipped bamboo leaves. The
fuchi/kashira follow the same theme and the golden
menuki feature a pair of sparrows. The saya is finished
in high-gloss lacquer with horn fittings.

The Lion Dog Katana features an O-Kissaki blade of
Hanwei's own high-alloy HWS-1S steel, which combines
superior performance with an outstanding O-choji hamon.
This steel is made in Hanwei's new factory, with
high-tech equipment, producing a very pure
advanced-metallurgy blade with the best edge-holding
capability and resilience of any blade ever produced by
Hanwei. The outstanding performance characteristics of
blades forged from HWS-1S steel derive from a
combination of the careful selection of alloying
elements and a complex processing procedure, basically
involving the manipulation of the steel’s carbon content
across the blade section. This results in a very tough
and resilient blade with a hard, highly
abrasion-resistant edge.

Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the most famous swordmaster in Japanese history,
fought more than 60 duels before retiring and writing his famous treatise on
swordplay, the "Book of Five Rings". Mounted in black, the Musashi is faithful to the original
down to the famous double-ring iron tsubas. The tsuka-ito is in leather over ray
skin. The blade is hand-forged in high-carbon steel, with new geometry to
enhance cutting ability. It is edge-tempered using the traditional clay
tempering method, resulting in a distinct hamon. Edge hardness is HRC60, back
hardness HRC40. The grip is double-pegged to the tang for safety. Supplied with
a protective cloth bag and traditional maintenance kit.
The Great wave katana is stylized with the renowned Tomoe motif.
The tsuba, fuchi, & kashira are made of black iron and marked with the Tomoe
crest (mon). The blades are hand-forged from T10 high-carbon steel and are
differentially tempered using traditional claying methods. The temper line (hamon)
is evident and prominent. Each piece has a deeply lacquered black saya with a
one-piece brass habaki construction. Real ray skin (same) is used on the tsuka,
and the tsuka-ito and sageo are made of premium woven Japanese black cotton. The
katana is constructed with a large o-kissaki and are ideal for cutting exercises
(tameshigiri).
This cutting katana from CAS/Hanwei is designed specifically for
the martial artist that needs a sword for the demands of rigorous tameshigiri.
The Wind & Thunder features a heavier and thicker blade with traditional
furniture and fittings. The Wind & Thunder is fitted with the black iron Raiden
tsuba and Tomoe motif fuchi and kashira. The handle is wrapped in genuine same
(ray skin) and the tsuka-ito is premium Japanese black cotton. The saya is done
in a traditional black laquer and the sageo is also black cotton. This sword is
an excellent choice for those intereseted in batto-jutsu.
In 1876, the Samurai were banned from carrying their swords.
This attempt to end a thousand year tradition was not received well by the proud
warrior class and the "stick katana" was born. Innocuous walking canes now
concealed the revered blades, but the katana lived on. The Bamboo Stick Katana
combines an artfully carved bamboo scabbard and handle with a blade (nagasa)
that is constructed of hand-forged 1065 high-carbon steel and is differentially
tempered using a traditional claying method. The edge hardness and resilient
blade body produced by this technique embody the true secret of the Samurai
sword.

It has been said that in simplicity lies great beauty, an axiom
stunningly validated by the Golden Oriole Katana. The story told by the stunning
tsuba is of a mantis stealthily stalking the cricket, unaware that he is himself
being stalked by the Golden Oriole. The deeply lacquered blue of the saya is
repeated in the Japanese cotton tsuka-ito, and the Oriole appears again on the
kashira. Unmistakably Hanwei quality, the 14" tsuka of the katana gives a superb
balance to the sword, allowing it to move very quickly and very freely. Supplied
with a protective cloth bag and traditional maintenance kit.
